The chocolate chip cookie has an interesting and somewhat accidental origin story. In 1930, Ruth Wakefield, owner of the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts, was baking a batch of butter drop do cookies when she realized she was out of baker's chocolate. In a moment of inspiration, she broke up a bar of Nestle semisweet chocolate into small pieces and added it to the dough, hoping the chocolate would melt and distribute throughout the cookies. To her surprise, the chocolate chunks stayed intact and created a new, delicious treat that she dubbed "Toll House Crunch Cookies". The cookies became an instant hit and soon Nestle began marketing the first chocolate chips specifically for baking, and the chocolate chip cookie became a staple of American baking. Today, the chocolate chip cookie remains one of the most beloved and iconic baked goods in the world.
Ingredients:
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
2 large eggs
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until creamy and smooth.
Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Then, stir in the vanilla extract.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.
Stir in the chocolate chips until evenly distributed throughout the dough.
Use a cookie scoop or spoon to drop dough balls onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 2 inches of space between each.
Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the centers are set.
Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the cookies cool on the sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
